MAIRE, a leading engineering Group providing technology solutions and project execution, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Kazakhstan, Samruk-Kazyna, and the Italo-Kazakh Trade Association (ACIK) to collaborate on developing a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) platform in the Republic of Kazakhstan. This initiative will leverage Nextchem’s technology portfolio and expertise alongside the Group’s proven execution capabilities.
The project was described by CEO of MAIRE, Alessandro Bernini, as “a meaningful step in advancing sustainable aviation fuel production in Kazakhstan. The country’s strategic position at the intersection of key Europe-Asia routes creates favorable conditions for the development of SAF supply chains, and thus a compelling opportunity to combine industrial development with long‑term market potential”. The CEO also highlighted that MAIRE, through Nextchem, “will bring its technological expertise to support the definition of efficient solutions, contributing to the country’s ambition to strengthen its role as a regional SAF hub”.
In detail, the agreement centers on evaluating the overall feasibility of SAF production by utilizing HEFA (Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids) feedstocks available within Kazakhstan. Through this project, the partners will work to analyze infrastructure options, align key stakeholders, and establish a viable investment framework, potentially within the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC). Meanwhile, Nextchem will spearhead the identification of critical technology pathways, ensuring a thorough assessment of technical, commercial, and financial viability.
Sharing the milestone on LinkedIn, Alessandro Bernini expressed pride in working alongside Kazakh institutions and industrial partners, noting that meeting Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of the Management Board of Samruk-Kazyna, reaffirmed a long-standing collaboration, of which this SAF project is a natural evolution. The CEO stressed that while aviation remains “one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonize”, SAF plays a crucial role in “reducing emissions while leveraging existing infrastructure and value chains”. He concluded that success in this regional SAF hub relies on a combination of “long-term vision, investment, industrial capabilities and strong partnerships”.
