Rivian launches Also: a bold step into electric micro-mobility
As the electric vehicle sector faces increasing pressure from high production costs and declining sales, Rivian has announced a bold move: the launch of a new company called Also, dedicated entirely to electric micro-mobility. This expansion aims to address the growing demand for more affordable, sustainable transportation options beyond standard electric cars.
With legacy automakers and EV startups struggling to remain competitive, especially against rapidly advancing Chinese manufacturers, Rivian is shifting its focus to smaller, more accessible vehicles. Also will concentrate on designing and producing compact zero-emission vehicles, including e-bikes, scooters, and other lightweight electric transport options. The goal is to tap into a wider audience and diversify the company’s portfolio in an increasingly challenging market.
Officially introduced in early April 2025, Also will be supported by a substantial €105 million investment, funded in part by venture capital firm Eclipse Ventures. This capital will drive the early stages of development, production, and market entry. Rivian’s founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, will serve as chairman of the new company’s board, ensuring close alignment with Rivian’s broader sustainability goals.
The first line of products from Also is expected to hit the market in 2026, marking a significant milestone in Rivian’s evolution. As Rivian prepares to launch its new R2 electric SUV, the company is simultaneously laying the foundation for a more inclusive, flexible approach to clean mobility.
